OXFORD CONDUCTING INSTITUTE
INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING STUDIES CONFERENCE 2018
21-23 June 2018
St Anne’s College, University of Oxford

Provisional programme for OCIICSC available here.

Vocal and instrumental conductors and conducting are at the core of a multitude of musical endeavours across the globe, shaping musical practices and experiences in substantial ways. Scholars and practitioners have explored, and continue to explore, historical, philosophical, social and psychological aspects of conducting across a wide range of practices, and OCIICSC aims to bring together these diverse perspectives. OCIICSC 2018, following on from an extremely successful inaugural conference in 2016, is the second of what is hoped to be a bi-annual conference series that will develop and maintain an international network of conducting scholars.

Whilst professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting masterclasses and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, researchers and practitioners are rarely in dialogue about these findings and experiences.

Here are a few quotes from 2016 delegates as they describe what they enjoyed most about the conference:

“I loved the opportunity to meet and engage with such a diverse group of individuals in the conducting field”

“I think overall having the opportunity to build friendships and network with other conductors who are working in academia. The relevance of research and performance is so important and the Conference fostered this to a high level. The close proximity to the presentations – catering and accommodation was excellent.”

“The social side was great, but I believe I enjoyed the diversity of very high-leveled presentations most.”

“Being able to have great conversations with other conductors. I also LOVED the great conversations after the gender panel. It was terrific to hear all of the conversations (both negative and positive). It created terrific dialogue.”

“Just having 3 days to think and reflect about what we do without having to conduct a rehearsal.”

The conference will be held at St Anne’s College, University of Oxford from Thursday the 21st through Saturday the 23rd of June 2018. Guest speakers are still being confirmed.

Organizing committee: Dr John Traill (University of Oxford), Dr Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey (University of Oxford), Professor Fiona M. Palmer (Maynooth University) and Chris Kim (Director of Orchestras, Cornell University).

This conference is presented by the OXFORD CONDUCTING INSTITUTE in partnership with ST ANNE’S COLLEGE and the UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD FACULTY OF MUSIC.
